Intraspecific variation in symbiont density in an insect–microbe symbiosis

چکیده
Many insects host vertically transmitted microbes, which can confer benefits to their hosts but are costly maintain and regulate. A key feature of these symbioses is variation: for example, symbiont density vary among genotypes. However, the evolutionary forces maintaining this variation remain unclear. We studied in using pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) bacterium Regiella insecticola, a that protect its against fungal pathogens. found relative varies both between two phylogenetic clades “biotypes.” Higher infections correlated with stronger survival costs, has little effect on protection provides fungi. Instead, we some genotypes, dramatic decline precedes loss infection. Together, our data suggest optimal infection likely different from perspective microbial fitness. might prevent by high within-host densities, do not appear benefit higher numbers may be advantaged losing symbionts certain environments. The standing observed natural populations could therefore maintained antagonistic coevolutionary interactions symbiotic microbes.

Heritability of symbiont density reveals distinct regulatory mechanisms in a tripartite symbiosis
Beneficial eukaryotic-bacterial partnerships are integral to animal and plant evolution. Understanding the density regulation mechanisms behind bacterial symbiosis is essential to elucidating the functional balance between hosts and symbionts. Citrus mealybugs, Planococcus citri (Risso), present an excellent model system for investigating the mechanisms of symbiont density regulation. They cont...

The symbiosis between fungus-farming ants (Attini, Formicidae), their cultivated fungi, garden-infecting Escovopsis pathogens, and Pseudonocardia bacteria on the ant integument has been popularized as an example of ant-Escovopsis-Pseudonocardia co-evolution. Recent research could not verify earlier conclusions regarding antibiotic-secreting, integumental Pseudonocardia that co-evolve to specifi...

All reef-building corals are obligately associated with photosynthetic microalgal endosymbionts called zooxanthellae. Zooxanthella taxonomy has emphasized differences between species of hosts, but the possibility of ecologically significant zooxanthella diversity within hosts has been the subject of speculation for decades. Analysis of two dominant Caribbean corals showed that each associates w...

Stable endosymbiosis of a bacterium into a host cell promotes cellular and genomic complexity. The mealybug Planococcus citri has two bacterial endosymbionts with an unusual nested arrangement: the γ-proteobacterium Moranella endobia lives in the cytoplasm of the β-proteobacterium Tremblaya princeps These two bacteria, along with genes horizontally transferred from other bacteria to the P. citr...

Given the importance of temperature for the shedding of trematode infective stages (cercariae) from gastropod first intermediate hosts, we investigated the response to temperature increases of trematodes of the intertidal snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus collected from different latitudes (differing in mean annual summer temperature) on the South Island of New Zealand. We investigated whether she...
